Sycamore Trees and I
May 2022
Acrylic on Canvas
24 x 36 inch

What do street sycamore trees feel when they get pruned? The question bothered the 9-year-old me as she witnessed branches fall down from the sharp lopper cuts. The concern vanished in my mind for years until recently I read about the obligations of the forestry division to prune trees in order to prevent them from blocking residents’ windows. As my adult self enjoyably wandered through the capillaries of my hometown made up of the emerald green tunnels which I took for granted, I seem to forget there once was a genuine soundless interview between us.

This piece rejoins the conversation between me and my old sycamore tree friends and ponders on what had been lost growing up. The vibrant color merges memorable imageries of the present and past as I embraced my younger self for the empathy she had for everyday living nuances.
